Sean McLoughlin: Ireland’s Forgotten Revolutionary book launch

January 22, 2011

The author Charlie McGuire will launch his new book ‘Sean McLoughlin: Ireland’s Forgotten Revolutionary’, in Glasgow on Saturday 19th of March 2011

The launch will take place in Woodside Hall (Large Hall), 36 Glenfarg Street, Glasgow G20 7QE. It will run from 11am to 12.30pm. The venue is just a few minutes walk from St George’s Cross Underground. The cost of the book is £15.95.

Sean McLoughlin was born in Dublin and shortly before his twenty-first birthday, took part in the Easter Rising. His leadership qualities and ability to think and act decisively under heavy fire were so outstanding, that James Connolly had him promoted to Commander in Chief of the Republican forces, after he himself sustained severe injuries on the previous day. McLoughlin organised the Republican evacuation from the bombed-out GPO, and also devised a plan for continuing the fight. He was overruled, however, by Padraig Pearse, who decided upon surrender.

After release from prison McLoughlin became an organiser of the Irish Volunteers in Tipperary and later moved to Scotland where he served in B Company of the 2nd Battalion of the Scottish Brigade of the IRA, which covered the areas of Wishaw and Newmains. He was also a Purchasing Agent for the Irish Citizen Army and conducted lectures and propaganda work throughout Scotland. McLoughlin later became active in socialist politics in Ireland and later England and was an innovative theoretician. The Socialist Labour Party meetings he addressed were attended by thousands of workers and he possessed impressive oratory skills. In later years he struggled with ill-health and died a wholly forgotten figure in Sheffield, aged just 64, in February 1960.
